Mission Dolores, located at 3321 16th Street, is a beautiful historical landmark, a true staple for both the city of San Francisco and the neighborhood in which it resides. Founded in 1776, the cathedral has seen the birth and growth of the city, now being the oldest intact building in San Francisco. As I walked into Mission Dolores for the very first time, I was in awe of its true loveliness, and I could immediately feel the presence of the vast history that resides within its walls. Though much of the mission complex itself has seen its share of change and rebuilding, the cathedral itself has remained untouched since its construction around 1782. The altar is truly gorgeous, and even though I myself am not a religious or particularly spiritual person, I believe anyone could go up to this altar and feel a strong and wonderful spiritual presence. During the California gold rush, people were pouring into the growing city looking to claim their dreams. At this time, two wooden roads were constructed from downtown San Francisco, to Mission Dolores itself. Becoming extremely popular during this time and bringing in so many new residents, it can be safely said that the Mission ultimately assisted in the establishment of the Mission District as well. Mission Dolores remains a prominent figure in today’s city, also serving its immediate community in the Mission by providing regular religious services, holding events such as the 18th Annual Candlelight Christmas Concert which will soon be taking place, and by reaching out to the homeless present in the neighborhood by offering them communion and working with other organizations to help offer food. I opted to takepart in one of the tours offered, and I loved seeing and learning all about the Mission and its history. I would highly recommend doing so as well to anybody who loves history and learning about truly interesting landmarks in the city.
